Both statements describe the beginning of coinage in the age of the Mahajanapadas (c. 6th–4th century BCE). Pali Buddhist texts mention coins such as the kahapana (karshapana), nikkha, kamsa and kakanika, and the earliest coins found in excavations — the silver (and some copper) punch-marked coins — confirm this literary evidence. Historians treat coinage as a marker of the second urbanisation in the Ganga valley: cities like Rajagriha, Shravasti, Kaushambi and Varanasi grew as centres of trade, crafts and administration, and their markets needed a standard medium of exchange.
At the same time, the appearance of metal money shows the transition from barter to a money economy. Texts refer to money-lending, interest, guilds (shrenis) and wages paid in coin, and taxes could now be collected in cash. So the statements are associated with both the emergence of urban life and the move to a money economy.
